Comfort and livability guided the transformation of this compact bungalow into a spacious, two-storey family home located in New Toronto, a lakeside neighbourhood in the city’s west end. In collaboration with the architect on the build, we brought to life a design that marries modern functionality with timeless architectural appeal — resulting in a home that supports daily life and offers a welcoming space for years to come.

The exterior, with its two-tone black and white palette, draws inspiration from the area’s classic cottage-style homes. Cement board panels and prefinished wood siding create a refined, approachable aesthetic that connects the home to its natural surroundings and establishes a harmonious yet modern presence within the neighbourhood.

Inside, a three-storey staircase serves as a central feature, acting as the home’s luminous core. Natural light flows in through a skylight above, filling the stairwell and filtering down through each floor, reaching the basement below. This design enhances the home’s openness, creating a fluid connection between the levels and adding a striking visual anchor.

The kitchen, designed to be the heart of the home, is bathed in natural light and centered around a terrazzo island that defines the space. A lightwell above allows sunlight to pour down, reinforcing the open, airy atmosphere and connecting the different levels with its seamless flow of light. White custom cabinetry pairs beautifully with sand-toned fluted details, bringing a soft, beach-inspired vibe that adds warmth and texture. This thoughtful combination draws on the nearby waterfront, weaving a sense of continuity that ties the entire interior together.

Sustainability is central to this rebuild. The home runs entirely on electricity, powered by a cutting-edge heat pump system that provides both heating and cooling. It works efficiently within a tightly sealed building envelope, enhanced by superior insulation to ensure energy efficiency throughout the year. The newly underpinned foundation, along with an advanced perimeter drainage system, ensures the home’s structural integrity and longevity.
